Endangered Species

Eric Metcalfe (b. 1940, Canadian) is a founding member of the Western Front (1973). He was a friend and student of Maxwell Bates — a Victoria artist who himself studied with Max Beckman. In the late 1960’s Metcalfe was involved in the correspondence network and adopted the performance persona, Dr. Brute. He is known for installations using his leopard spot motif and for his video productions fo the 1980’s. The Belkin Art Gallery mounted a retrospective of his work, “Return to Brutopia” in 1992 when this silkscreen was produced with master printer Tara Bonnieman.

In Endangered Species the ever-mutating Leopard Spot motif is now associated with images of viruses and endangered species.
