The Belkin Satellite, Vancouver and Open Space, Victoria were proud to present and launch the publication for QUARTET FOR THE YEAR 4698 OR 5760: improvisation for four projectors — a multimedia project by interdisciplinary artist Laiwan, in collaboration with composer and musician extraordinaire Lori Freedman. This project premiered at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, UBC, Vancouver in June of 2000, travelled across Canada the following month to participate at The Sound Symposium Festival, St John’s, Newfoundland, to then exhibit at OBORO, Montreal in 2001 and Open Space, Victoria in 2002.
This 36-page publication thoroughly brings together installation photographs, essays and articles, including chronologies illustrating the multifaceted practices of both artists, to celebrate the many viewpoints this ambitious project presented. It materializes into book form an in-depth analysis of a cinematic, technologically challenging, performative work by two collaborating artists based in different disciplines.
The launch also presented a special live improvisational performance by Lori Freedman on clarinets, followed by a screening of a new video poem by Laiwan.
Part proceeds of all books sold at the Vancouver launch will go to the fundraising efforts of Spartacus Books — the collectively run, non-profit, radical bookstore of 30 years which was destroyed by fire on April 25, 2004.
